Efficiency - what does that mean in movement?

We are designed for efficiency and yet we often train it out of ourselves - in movement practices that tell us to work harder, be faster, stronger , do more repetitions, feel the burn. Just practise more and you’ll get better at what you do is something I had to listen to and I still hear in the world of movement. 🙄

Whilst that is is gratifying as in a disconnected world we can feel something - often too much of the same movement can lead to injury and burnout and sadly that’s something I deal with every week in the studio when people arrive from all walks of life with injury, pain and discomfort and sadly, they have lost their joy of movement.

Movement shouldn’t be like that and doesn’t have to be like that - contrary to what a lot of social media would have us believe. 😵

Often what we don’t need is more ‘core’ or more ‘stretching’ or more ‘repetitions’. These are old salesmen that keep coming out of the closet. What we do need is balance and to use our body intelligently and efficiently the way it was designed to be used.

For dancers especially this is true - constant training, classes, rehearsals and impeccably high standards put them at risk of burnout. This can show up as exhaustion, lack of enjoyment and frequent injuries and developing faulty movement patterns. Basically the body is overloaded - it has not been given time to rest and adapt. If this continues long enough the body will respond in ways we have not planned for.

True burnout is a complex condition that needs medical assistance, but what about doing something before ever reaching that stage? 😃✨✨✨
